Today we extract more natural resources than ever before in history. The global consumption of materials has risen by nearly 80% in the past 30 years and amounts to about 70 billion tons per year today. The share of non-renewable materials has risen drastically within the past 30 years and is 70% of the total consumption today. This means that humankind becomes increasingly dependant on non-renewable resources, such as fossil fuels, metals and minerals.
