New research findings and problem solving approaches
Can Austria reach current energy and climate goals by 2020? The
research institute SERI along with its partners tried to figure out
answers to this question in the e-co project by order of the “Klima- und
Energiefonds (Climate and Energy Fund)”. On the one hand, they examined
how necessary changes in Austrian energy consumption could look like
and on the other hand they analyzed the resulting effects on the
economy. Therefore, different scenarios with diverse foci were
developed, such as expansion of renewable energy, increase in efficiency
and reduction of consumption through behavioral change. Results are
disillusioning. Only one of the scenarios achieves the target of a 34%
renewable energy share of final energy consumption by 2020. Not a single
scenario provides a decrease in CO2-emissions below the level of 1990
(62,08m tons CO2) – the Kyoto emission target for Austria would be 13%
below the level of 1990. However, the transition towards sustainable
forms of energy use has a positive effect on the GDP as well as on
employment rates.

Eva Burger on the 41st LCA Discussion Forum on Environmental product information and LCA
At the discussion forum successful examples of environmental product information covering more than carbon footprints were presented and discussed. Furthermore the reaction of consumers on such information and the best ways of providing complicated interrelations in a simplified way were evaluated. The presentations for the forum are now online and you can find them on http://www.lcainfo.ch/df/DF41/Program.htm.

“Overconsumption” now available in Spanish
In 2008, SERI established a cooperation with the environmental NGOs GLOBAL 2000 and Friends of the Earth Europe on the issue of “Europe’s Resource Use”. We consider that it is essential for sustainable development in Europe that a debate is started about our resource use and its environmental and social impacts around the world.
In order to help this debate, we presented a report in 2009, entitled “Overconsumption? Our use of the world’s natural resources”. This report provides a compilation of information on current trends in European and global resource use.
The report has now been translated into Spanish by Friends of the Earth Spain.
Download the report “Overconsumption? Our use of the world’s natural resources” in English, German or in Spanish.
MELIA project – SERI publishes Leaflet in English and Arabic
The MELIA project aims at establishing a strategic dialogue between experts, scientists, consumers and producers on integrated water ressource management in the Mediteranean region. It is hence of greatest importance to make sure that project results, elaborated documents, etc are disseminated not only within the MELIA community, and not only in the English speaking part of the Mediterranean. Consequently, one of the deliverables foreseen for the workpackage 7 on Water Participatory Management and Water Governance with SERI as the workpackage leader was a leaflet informing of the most important conceptual issues, the main project outcomes and results. This leaflet was prepared in English and Arabic and can be downloaded here.
