High Level Conference "Growth in Transition" – discussion forum online

The public discussion platform is designed to support the preparation of the international conference "Growth in Transition" which will take place on 28th and 29th of January 2010 in Vienna. The conference aims at debating approaches for high quality of life and sustainable prosperity for everyone. The updated conference programme is here available.

The conference initiators put the following topics (in the framework of ten thematic sessions) for discussion:

  • Money and the Financial System
  • Growth and Resource Use
  • Social Justice and Poverty
  • Macroeconomics for Sustainability
  • Quality of Life & Measurement of Prosperity
  • Work
  • Regional Aspects
  • Governance
  • Sustainable Production and Consumption
  • Sustainable Management

The case study of the Little's family - a representative upper middle class family - illustrate the ten thematic sessions and aim to stimulate the discussion. The outcomes of the discussion process of this forum will be summarized and embedded in the conference.

SERI zum Klimawandel

In Kopenhagen findet derzeit die Klimakonferenz der Vereinten Nationen statt und die Klimaverhandlungen gehen nun in die entscheidende Phase.

SERI arbeitet in mehreren Projekten an Themen, die dort verhandelt werden. Dazu gehören der Zusammenhang zwischen Klimaveränderung und Lebensqualität, die Beschäftigung mit dem Problem sog. „Klima-MigrantInnen“, die korrekte Zuordnung der CO2-Emissionen auf diejenigen, die die für die Emissionen verantwortlichen Güter letztlich konsumieren oder Vorschläge für eine ökologische Steuerreform. Und Ende der Woche erscheint ein Zeitungskommentar einer von Fritz Hinterberger initiierten Gruppe österreichischer ÖkonomInnen zum Thema Wachstum. Details

Presentation on Sustainability for Regional Policy in Warsaw

On Monday, November 30th, 2009, Fritz Hinterberger presented a paper co-authored with Elke Pirgmaier, Eva Burger, Lisa Bohunovsky and Stefan Gilum at the Sixth European Conference on Evaluation of Cohesion Policy: “New Methods for cohesion Policy Evaluation:  Promoting Accountability and Learning”, organized by the European Commission, DG Regio. Our presentation is on “Sustainable development – a concept developed enough to guide Cohesion Policy programmes? “. Presentation ist here available, paper will be available at our website soon.

SERI maintains the website of the European Society for Ecological Economics (ESEE) and publishes the quarterly electronic newsletter. The winter edition of the electronic ESEE newsletter is now online!

DegrowthPedia – the new collaborative information network about degrowth

SERI is partner of the new platform DegrowthPediabeta. The idea of degrowth for ecological sustainability and social equity is spreading in Europe. Many movements, associations, groups, institutes, networks support degrowth and develop research, voluntary simplicity, projects, economic theories, civil action, political parties, editions, and communications on related themes. However, there is a need for new types of cooperative transformations especially in the English language space. Details

SERI supports the Amsterdam Declaration of Club of Rome

The Club of Rome organized from 26th to 27th October 2009 a two days conference in Amsterdam on climate, energy and economic recovery.  This public event was successfully held, with over 700 participants, to focus on the critical issues that will determine the future. As an outcome the “Amsterdam Declaration” was published.

SERI Projects

Field research suggests that the number of potential “climate migrants” may be overestimated

On the basis of 23 case studies, most of them in Africa, Asia and Latin America and the Caribbean, the EACH-FOR (Environmental Change and Forced Migration Scenarios) project demonstrated a range of complex interlinkages. First, it is clear that climate change is not the only potential trigger for migration, but it is one important trigger that can directly or indirectly affect decisions to move. Details

Final report of the petrE project published

The Anglo-German-Foundation published the final report of the petrE project on “Resource productivity, environmental tax reform and sustainable growth in Europe“. The final report was compiled by the project coordinator, Paul Ekins. Christine Polzin and Stefan Giljum from SERI were lead authors of the report chapter dealing with the global economic and environmental implications of environmental tax reforms. SERI investigates global responsibility for CO2 emissions

In a new project for the German Development Institute (DIE) we look at the embodied CO2 emissions in international trade and the global climate responsibility of consumption. For more information on this new project please click here.

Successful completion of the INDI-LINK project

The research project Indicator-based evaluation of interlinkages between different sustainable development objectives (INDI-LINK), in which SERI served as scientific coordinator, improved EU sustainable development indicators, assessed the interlinkages between the different priorities of the EU Sustainable Development Strategy (SDS) and derived conclusions for future SD policy making. EcoChange meeting in Zurich

The aim of the project is to assess and forecast changes in terrestrial biodiversity and ecosystems and in the ability of biodiversity and ecosystems to supply goods and services and to buffer against climate and land use change. Amongst other issues, the Zurich meeting touched on the very tricky question how to implement and process data deriving from various models in the Integrated Sustainability Assessment (led by SERI) and the Agent Based Modelling in order to assess the impacts of environmental change on ecosystem goods and services. Hochkarätiger Workshop zum Projekt „Energieverbrauchsstile“

Unter anderem hat eine Befragung von über 1.000 österreichischen Haushalten ergeben, dass reichere/jüngere Haushalte mehr auf Effizienz achten, aber insgesamt durch eine höhere Nutzung auch mehr verbrauchen. Auf der anderen Seite verhalten sich ärmere/ältere Haushalte Energie zwar sparsamer, sind aber durch ältere Geräte oder schlechte Isolierung der Wohngebäude ineffizienter – was am Ende des Tages pro Kopf fast auf das Gleiche kommt. Politikvorschläge für Kopenhagen: Mit einer Ökologischen Steuerreform kann die EU ihre Klimaziele erreichen

Im Projekt „Ressourcenproduktivität, ökologische Steuerreform und nachhaltiges Wachstum in Europa“ (siehe www.seri.at/petre) hat SERI in Zusammenarbeit mit anderen Europäischen Instituten nachgewiesen, dass eine ökologische Steuerreform ein sinnvolles Politikinstrument ist, um die Treibhausgas-Emissionen der EU entsprechend ihrer Ziele bis zum Jahr 2020 zu reduzieren.
SERI Inputvortrag beim Kick-Off Meeting zum Aktionsplan Ressourceneffizienz
Am 17.11. fand das Kick-Off Meeting zur Erstellung eines österreichischen Aktionsplans Ressourceneffizienz statt. Im Dialog mit Wirtschaft, Verwaltung, Politik und Zivilgesellschaft sollen Leitziele für eine höhere Ressourceneffizienz in Österreich formuliert und in Form von Leitmaßnahmen und -instrumenten umgesetzt werden. Stefan Giljum wurde als Gastredner eingeladen, einen Überblick über österreichische, Europäische und internationale Entwicklungen im Bereich Ressourcennutzung und Ressourceneffizienz zu geben. Weiters wurde in dem Vortrag der von SERI mit Friends of the Earth erstellte Bericht “Ohne Maß und Ziel” vorgestellt, sowie die wichtigsten Inhalte des World Resources Forum zusammengefasst, das im September in Davos, Schweiz stattfand. SERI im Radio

Am 28.11 holte Radio Wien-Redakteur Bernd Matschedolnig die britische Ökologin und Geographin Jill Jäger - Autorin des “SERI-Buchs” mit dem Titel “Was verträgt unsere Erde noch?” (Fischer Taschenbuch) - vor das Mikro.
Und eine Woche später war bereits Fritz Hinterberger im Ö3-Wecker (”Zwei Millionen Österreicher stehen täglich mit dem Ö3-Wecker auf.”) zum Thema Klimawandel – wo liegt das Problem, was kann der/die einzelne tun, was muss insgesamt getan werden?

SERI bei der Global Entrepreneurship Week in Wien!
Im Rahmen der Global Entrepreneurship Week stellte die Initiative für Teaching Entrepreneurship (www.ifte.at) am 17.11. das neue Workshop Buch ‘Sustainability Meets Entrepreneurship’ vor. Das Buch gibt einen kurzen konzeptionellen Überblick über Unternehmertum und Nachhaltigkeit (mit einem Beitrag von Johannes Frühmann). Beim Round Table im Anschluss an die Buchpräsentation war Fritz Hinterberger als Podiumsgast geladen, um über das Potential nachhaltiger Unternehmen zu diskutieren. Jill Jäger prepared background paper for Workshop on Sustainability Science in Brussels
Around 16 people from diverse backgrounds were invited by the Unit of Sustainable Development of DG Research for a one-day meeting in Brussels, 28 October 2009. The purpose of the meeting was to discuss the needs and potential of “sustainability science”, around the three following questions:
  • What is the state of play of sustainability science in Europe?
  • How could sustainability science contribute to the shaping of sustainable development research in the near future?
  • What kind of activities of sustainability science could be foreseen at European level?

The discussion was based on a background paper prepared by Jill Jäger and available here. Details

Der Kapp-Forschungspreis für Ökologische Ökonomie

Der Kapp-Forschungspreis für Ökologische Ökonomie richtet sich an junge Wissenschaftlerinnen und Wissenschaftler im deutschsprachigen Raum und soll Arbeiten zur Ökologischen Ökonomie fördern.
Das Thema der diesjährigen Ausschreibung lautet:
Die Klimakrise – ein komplexes Phänomen
Herausforderungen und Gestaltungsansätze einer nachhaltigen Ökonomie

Für den Kapp-Forschungspreis können Master-, Diplom-, Doktor- und sonstige Forschungsarbeiten
eingereicht werden. Der methodische Ansatz der Ökologischen Ökonomie erfordert eine fachübergreifende und möglichst transdisziplinäre Gesamtsicht auf die Thematik und eröffnet insofern nicht nur wirtschaftswissenschaftliche, sondern gleichermaßen natur-, sozial- und geisteswissenschaftliche Zugänge.
