The trading enterprise SPAR Austria has integrated environmental protection in the company principles. This project aims to measure and further improve the resource efficiency and sustainability performance in the several divisions of SPAR Austria.
SPAR Austria attends his social responsibility in all of the company’s divisions. Beside numerous activities for encouragement of social sustainability in the company, SPAR Austria obliged to environmental protection already since the early 1970´s.
Nowadays, environmental protection does not only mean the avoidance of harmful substances to the environment, also the reduction of rubbish, greenhouse gases and the extinction of species should be considered. Resource efficient performances mitigates environmental problem by reducing the input of natural resources.
Since September 2008 SERI advises SPAR Austria on their way to a further improvement of the sustainability in the company. To identify the status quo of the ecological sustainability of selected company´s divisions, an more comprehensive set of indicators based on the concept of the Ecological Rucksack is used. The set of indicators evaluates the following categories of resources: Consumption of biotic and abiotic materials, land use, water consumption and greenhouse gas emission. Following the results of the status quo analyses possible measures to improve the resource efficiency were identified by means of hot-spot analyses and scenarios and in close cooperation with intra company experts of SPAR Austria.
Concrete courses of action were evaluated in the fields of store brands, fresh meat / cold cuts, logistics and construction / energy.
