Sustainable Sanitation Systems – Practical Applications

NASPA contributes to the application of sustainable sanitation systems. Within the project SERI did an acceptance analysis for one of the five case studies for alternative concepts of sanitation systems.

Conventional sanitation systems are not always the ecological and economical best option, especially for remote rural settlements. The necessity to support sustainable sanitation systems was more and more recognised during the last years, but due to a lack of operating experience only rarely applied. By means of five objects (2 rural settlements, a housing estate, an office building and a private home), new options for sustainable sanitation systems are analysed and recommendations are developed.

The objectives of the project are:

• Analysis of the current water management and demonstration of the potential of water saving technologies.
• Optimization of greywater- and blackwater reed-bed treatment plants (constructed wetlands).
• Development of optimized guidelines and operation concepts for service water and reed-bed sludge treatment plants.
• Awareness creation and distribution of sustainable sanitation systems through participatory planning.

As alternative sanitary systems are often controversially discussed in public and politics, SERI accompanied one of the case studies with an acceptance analysis in order to learn more about the main pros and cons and to start a positive discussion in the case study area.
