Volume 1: Transformative Science Approaches for Sustainability

This book, edited by Carlo Jaeger, J. David Tabara and Julia Jaeger, contains the winning papers from the European Conference on R&D for Sustainable Development held in Brussels in 2009 together with a selection of other papers. In her chapter on “Risks and Opportunities for Sustainability Science in Europe” Jill Jäger, who was an overall rapporteur for the 2009 conference, reflects on the development of sustainability science and on how it was covered at the conference. She finds that while important elements, such as stakeholder involvement, implementation-orientation, envisioning, evaluation and learning, were covered in individual papers, very few papers covered all elements of sustainability science.
