The treaty of the European Union defines sustainable development as a constitutional target of the EU. In particular the articles 2 and 6 of the EU treaty require the integration of environmental, economic and social policies in order to promote sustainable development. On this basis SERI advises governments and relevant agents within society. In addition to general research on policy integration sectoral studies exist for the EU Single Market, transport and energy policies. Other key areas for sustainability and policy integration such as the EU's Regional Policy, enlargement, research and technology development are also in the scope of SERI's activities. SERI helps governments and NGOs in Europe in the implementation
fo Project Areas Integration and SD Strategy In Article 6 of the Amsterdam Treaty, environmental protection is not understood as a sectorial policy, but rather a maxim involving all sectors. This does not render independent environmental ministries superfluous, but rather requires the creation of interfaces in other sectors. EU enlargement EU-Enlargement and the realisation of Sustainable Development are among the biggest challenge of the European Union. Both processes are interlinked and should be treated as mutually beneficial. Regional Policy Together with regions from 6 different EU member states and 3 accession countries SERI wants to explore options for sustainable regional policies. For this purpose the regions want to set up a "laboratory" including a framework for practical examples, training and pilot projects. |
