This research project aims to delineate the implications of globalisation for one of the major prerequisites of sustainable development, sustainable consumption. In particular, the project will assess the effects of globalisation on the determinants of consumption and on policy strategies to pursue sustainability. This objective will be accomplished in two steps. First, the project will analyse the general influence of globalisation on the needs and preferences of consumers and on their abilities to satisfy them. Specifically, the study will examine the implications of structural changes in flows and institutional contexts of trade, finance and communication on the determinants and consequences of consumption patterns. In the second step, the project will evaluate policy strategies to improve the sustainability of consumption. This evaluation will consider strategies and instruments ranging from traditional regulatory policy by the state to presently evolving forms of global governance built on the involvement of non-state and transnational actors. Ultimately, the project aims to identify those
policy strategies and instruments which can best foster sustainable consumption
patterns in a globalising world. Project partners
