Projects: Beyond Growth - Nachhaltige Entwicklung versus Wirtschaftswachstum? (completed)

Under this title an international conference was held in Berlin in 1999 between September 24th and 26th, organised by the Heinrich-Böll-Stiftung in co-operation with the Wuppertal Institut für Klima, Umwelt, Energie and three scientific associations: The Vereinigung für Ökologische Ökonomie (VÖÖ), the European Society for Ecological Economics (ESEE) and the International Society for Ecological Economics (ISEE).

Some of the questions discussed at the conference were the following:

Could economic growth and consumption of resources be separated?
Does economic growth of the industrialised countries still contribute to an increase of our quality of live?
Can growth be un-economically?
Which roles can play new models of affluence?
What are the possibilities and the framework for a policy "beyond growth"?

In co-operation with the Heinrich-Böll-Stiftung SERI is working at a publication of the contributions to the conference. The papers will be published as a special edition of the journal "Politische Ökologie".

Our project "Beyond growth" ended with the publication of "Jenseits des Wachstums", issue 66 of Politische Ökologie, edited by the Heinrich-Boell Foundation in co-operation with Fritz Hinterberger and Fred Luks. Contributors include Herman E. Daly, Eric Neumeyer, Gerhard Scherhorn, Gerhard Meyer-Rigaud, Klaus Tpfer, Elmar Altvater, Hans-Werner Bellin and Thilo Bode.
